Easter SEAG Study Guide: How to Gently Start SEAG Preparation in Primary 6

Easter is just around the corner! And for many Primary 6 families, a SEAG study guide is something that could be very useful at this time! A SEAG study guide is the perfect companion for this time of year when conversations about the SEAG transfer test begin to appear. You’ve probably just been to the transfer test meeting at your child’s school! But here’s the thing… Easter is not the time to panic. Instead, Easter is the perfect opportunity to gently begin your child’s SEAG preparation.

Your child has worked hard all year and they deserve a break. However, introducing a small amount of preparation over Easter can help build confidence and familiarity without overwhelming them. By starting slowly at Easter, you can help your child develop confidence and understanding, so when preparation increases later in Primary 6 and into Primary 7, they already feel comfortable and ready.

A Gentle First Step

If you’re not sure where to begin, I’ve created a FREE SEAG Practice Paper and Preparation Roadmap to help Primary 6 families get started.

This will help you:

  • Introduce SEAG-style questions
  • Understand the preparation stages
  • Start calmly and confidently

You can download it here and have a wee read while you are enjoying your Easter egg with a cup of tea!

This SEAG preparation roadmap guides you on how to start your child's SEAG preparation. You can use it as a SEAG study guide.

Why is Easter a Good Time to Begin SEAG Preparation?

The Easter holidays are often the first real opportunity to introduce SEAG-style preparation without the pressure of school routines. Students have more time to relax, fewer homework commitments and a chance to work at a gentle pace. This makes Easter the perfect time to introduce preparation calmly and positively.

Starting early also means there is no rush later. Preparation becomes gradual, manageable and far less stressful for both children and parents.

Easter is the perfect time to start your SEAG study guide with your child as your routine is slower and there are less commitments.

7 Ways to Gently Begin SEAG Preparation This Easter: Your Easter SEAG Study Guide for Primary 6

To help you get started, I’ve put together 7 simple ways to introduce SEAG preparation this Easter, while still enjoying chocolate eggs, family time and spring days out!

7 Ways to Gently Begin SEAG Preparation This Easter: Your Easter SEAG Study Guide for Primary 6

1. Start with Short, Gentle Sessions

Easter is not about long revision sessions. Instead, aim for short, relaxed practice.

Even 20–30 minutes a few times during the holidays is enough to:

  • Build confidence
  • Introduce question types
  • Reduce anxiety

Keep things light and positive. The goal is confidence, not perfection.

The first tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is to start with short, gentle sessions. It is important not to overwhelm your child at this stage.

2. Introduce SEAG-Style Questions

Easter is a great time to introduce your child to SEAG-style questions for the first time.

This helps children:

  • Understand the format
  • Become familiar with multiple-choice questions
  • Build confidence early

Remember, this is about familiarity, not pressure.

The second tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is to introduce SEAG-style questions. This will give your child a glimpse at what they can expect in school after the Easter holidays.

3. Focus on Building Foundations

At this stage, strong foundations are key.

You can gently focus on:

  • Core maths skills
  • Reading fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar

These foundations will make everything else much easier later.

The third tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is to focus on building foundations. Just like any other break from school, Easter is a great time to solidify the topics that your child has been learning in school.

4. Keep Reading Going

Reading is one of the most powerful ways to prepare for the SEAG transfer test.

Encourage your child to:

  • Read a chapter each day
  • Try different types of books
  • Discuss what they are reading

This helps build vocabulary, comprehension and confidence, all essential for the SEAG tests.

The fourth tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is to keep reading going. This is a lovely relaxing activity which will be perfect for over the Easter break.

5. Make Learning Fun and Creative

Easter is the perfect time to keep learning fun.

You could:

  • Create revision cards
  • Play maths games
  • Try Easter-themed word puzzles
  • Use creative writing prompts

Children often learn best when they don’t even realise they are learning!

The fifth tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is to make learning fun and creative. When the schools are off and your routine is a bit slower, you can start to get creative and more interactive with your child's learning.

6. Introduce Light Practice Papers (Optional)

If your child is ready, Easter can be a good time to try short or beginner-level practice papers.

There’s no need to introduce timing yet, simply allow your child to:

  • Get familiar with questions
  • Build confidence
  • Work at their own pace

Remember, Easter is about gentle beginnings.

The sixth tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is optional and depends on what stage of transfer test preparation your child is at and that's to introduce light practice papers.

7. Enjoy the Easter Break

This tip is one of the most important…enjoy the break!

Your child has worked hard all term, so make sure there is plenty of time for:

  • Family days out
  • Easter egg hunts
  • Time with friends
  • Relaxation and fun

A relaxed child is a confident learner.

The seventh tip in my Easter SEAG study guide is the most important and that's to enjoy the Easter break! Have fun with family, make some memories and of course eat plenty of chocolate!

Starting Early Makes a Big Difference

Beginning SEAG preparation at Easter doesn’t mean rushing into full SEAG practice papers.

Instead, it’s about:

  • Building confidence
  • Introducing question types
  • Developing strong foundations

Starting early allows preparation to grow gradually and calmly over time.

Using this SEAG study guide over Easter doesn't mean going full steam ahead with preparation. It's meant to be a relaxing, gentle introduction.
