7 Encouraging Steps for Starting Primary 6 SEAG Prep

Here are 7 helpful, practical, and pressure-free ways to support your child in the early stages of SEAG NI transfer test prep, plus an amazing resource bundle you’re going to want in your back pocket!

Let's get started into my 7 encouraging steps for starting Primary 6 SEAG preparation.

1. Get Familiar With the SEAG Format

You don’t need to memorise every mark scheme or testing rule, but having a general understanding of how the SEAG works will make this whole journey feel far less mysterious.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • 2 SEAG papers are taken in Primary 7 in November over two Saturdays.
  • They assess English and Maths, and include both open-response and multiple-choice questions.
  • Each paper lasts 1 hour and includes a mix of topics from across the KS2 curriculum.

At this stage, just knowing what’s coming will help you feel more confident, and that rubs off on your child, too!

The first step for Primary 6 SEAG prep is to get familiar with the SEAG format as it can be quite confusing at first.

2. Focus on Core Skills

Before you start worrying about SEAG scores, the best thing you can do is help your child strengthen their everyday literacy and numeracy skills. Make sure you use the Primary 6 Curriculum Northern Ireland as a starting point!

Think:

  • Reading with understanding
  • Following multi-step instructions
  • Times tables fluency
  • Writing full, clear answers (not just “I don’t know”)

You don’t need to sit down with a red pen and a stopwatch. Just supporting these essential skills at home, through fun tasks, mini challenges, or workbook-style activities, lays the groundwork for confident SEAG success later on.

Psst! This is exactly what’s included in my SEAG Transfer Test Starter Pack! Beginner-friendly English and Maths revision books designed for P6 learners, no scary test conditions in sight!

The second step for Primary 6 SEAG prep is to focus on core skills. Focus on building your child's core English and Maths skills so they have a solid foundation for their SEAG prep.

3. Make Reading a Daily Habit

If you only do one thing this term, make it reading. Reading helps with comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and overall focus, and it doesn’t have to be boring. Let your child choose books they want to read. Mix in fiction and non-fiction. Read aloud together. Chat about what’s happening in the story.

Some easy ways to boost reading:

  • Keep a book in the car or school bag
  • Swap out 10 minutes of screen time for story time
  • Read to your child, yes, even in P6!
  • Ask open questions like, “Why do you think she did that?” or “What do you think will happen next?”

Reading isn’t just prep for SEAG English, it’s prep for life.

The third step to starting Primary 6 SEAG prep is to make reading a daily habit. Reading is amazing for SEAG preparation but also for every day life.

4. Practise Writing Full Answers

So many children know the answer… but struggle to write it clearly. One of the best ways to start SEAG preparation is to encourage your child to complete working out, be able to explain how they get their answers and keep their work structured.

Start encouraging:

  • Full sentences instead of one-word answers
  • Showing how they worked something out in maths
  • Using punctuation correctly. Capital letters and full stops go a long way!
  • Re-reading answers to check they make sense

You can even try doing this verbally first. Ask your child to explain their thinking out loud before writing it down; it builds confidence and clarity.

The fourth step is to get your child to practise writing full answers. This can start off as them explaining how they got a particular answer during their Primary 6 SEAG prep.

5. Make Maths Make Sense

Forget rushing through every topic in the curriculum; right now, it’s about understanding, not speed. This is the stage to slow down and make sure the basics are solid.

Key maths areas to focus on:

  • Place value
  • Addition & subtraction strategies
  • Multiplication & division facts
  • Fractions (especially halves, quarters and thirds)
  • Word problems with real-life context

One of my top tutoring tips is to use real-life situations like cooking, shopping, or planning a trip to sneak in some sneaky maths. Way more fun than worksheets alone!

The fifth step for Primary 6 SEAG prep is to make maths make sense. By making your child's maths skills strong from the beginning, you are securing a solid base for SEAG prep.

6. Try a Gentle Practice Paper (Just One!)

One of the best ways to take the fear out of the transfer test is by introducing practice papers in a relaxed, positive way. Not to test. Not to time. Just to get familiar.

Start with a Level 1 paper (these are perfect for beginners) and look at it together:

  • Spot the different sections
  • Talk about the types of questions
  • Let your child ask questions too
  • Remind them it’s just a starting point, not a final result

My Starter Pack includes Level 1 practice papers designed exactly for this stage, no pressure, just progress.

7. Keep It Light and Positive

Here’s your golden rule for starting SEAG prep: Keep it calm, kind, and consistent.

This isn’t about piling on pressure; it’s about building confidence. Encourage effort over perfection, celebrate small wins, and give your child plenty of time to rest and play, too. The journey to SEAG success is a long one, and how it feels at the start matters more than any early score.

And my last Primary 6 SEAG prep tip is to keep it light and positive. Don't put pressure on your child from the very beginning. This is a long process and journey so it is best to start nice and calmly.
